I’ve been a grateful yoga teacher for twenty years and can’t imagine ever doing anything else. I grew up as a ballet dancer and fell in love with yoga in my late 20’s. This practice has given me strength, mobility, humility and softness and inspires me daily.
For me, yoga is a blessing and a balm.
When we all began to Shelter in Place in 2020, I started teaching online classes and was able to connect with students I hadn’t seen in years. It was such a joy to see Los Angeles yogis who’d relocated to New York, Wisconsin, Florida, Maine, etc. Suddenly, with these live, on-screen classes, we could all access each other from coast-to-coast and practice together…“Shelter in Yoga” was born.
I’ve always taught primarily with verbal cues instead of demonstrating the poses as it allows me to watch, clarify and keep students safely aligned. I have found great affection for teaching online as I’m able to see the “room” in ways I couldn’t in an in-person setting. My students have found that I can observe and help them as they practice just as effectively now as before we moved to the screen.
The best part about doing yoga from home is that home is where we most need the practice. The chaos of our everyday lives like work, family, laundry and maybe a dog or a couple cats creates a perfect environment to turn inside to find our breath and ourselves.
It may sound odd, but there is a kind of intimacy, a closeness we achieve in these classes where we gather and come to yoga. Regardless of geography, we practice together.
It’s an honor and privilege to share yoga and I look forward to our time together. As we widen this circle and start a new studio, right here online, there’s always room for you!
